12 Days to Something, Maybe! (and you could win two brand new books, plus one more!)

Thursday, March 12, 2009

In Something, Maybe, I do something I haven't done in any of my other books--and that's mention specific websites.

In order to to that, I had to find websites that hadn't been used--which, let me tell you, is harder than you'd think! (For instance, when I set up this website way back when, I couldn't use my name because someone else was already using it. So that's how elizabethwrites.com came to be)

Anyway! After making sure all the potential websites I was writing about didn't already exist, I bought all the domain names for those websites. Two of them are mentioned in the excerpt (which you can read here or here) and today I want to know this:

What are one of those two websites, where does it go now, and is there somewhere else you think it should go--for instance, should I set up a separate page for the book that all those links go to, and if so, what should be on it?

Let me know your thoughts by midnight tonight and then the winner with the best suggestion will get a copy of *two* brand-new novels: Jennifer Lynn Barnes' Fate and Rachel Hawthorne's Moonlight *plus* an autographed copy of any one of my novels. And obviously, I'll do my best to follow the winning suggestion!

12 Days YAY! (And congrats to yesterday's winner, Naima)

Question #1 and #2: I linked to candymadison.net...which put me back on elizabethwrites.com/something maybe...where I stopped to read some high praise about the novel!

Question #3: Since that first part about her mom cracked me up (and became the bane of Hannah's existence...) could you find someone to do a spoof commerical? I would love a visual! Maybe a magazine cover of "best and worst dressed"?
Just a thought.

What are we going to do when this conetest is over??? :)

I am not going to be greedy so I am just going to be leaving a comment.

I think it's incredibly cool that you are doing this with the websites. Great forward thinking!

candymadison.net redirects to the Something, Maybe page on elizabethwrites.com.

Um...honestly, I don't mind that they redirect to the Something, Maybe page.

If the domains were purchased to keep others from buying them, I don't see how it's necessary to actually use them. The content of the domains is somewhat described in the book, and to me, it would be weird to visit candymadison.net and it not be the candymadison.net of the book.

Maybe if the Something, Maybe site would have the main domain of somethingmaybenovel.com or something? In general, though, I'm not a fan of book sites, especially when the author has a website of his or her own. I'd rather read an in-depth explanation of how the book came to be than to read a paragraph about the main characters or a description of where Hannah works.

So there's my thoughts. :-)

I went to CandyMadison.net as well, which took me to your S,M page.

I personally think you should make kind of an interactive book site for Candy Madison: Taking It All Off.

If you had the time, you could just create a few pages, and maybe your own cover for the character's book.

It'd be good to write an excerpt from Candy's book, an author interview, and a short bio.

I know she's not real, but how cool would that be?!

That way, when people visited the site, it'd be realisic, and would be like extra Something, Maybe content. Plus, more of your writing for us to read! (and how fun would it be to write from Candy's perspective?!)

The site is candymadison.net which redirects to your Something Maybe page! :) I tried it out last week or something and was really surprise when the site existed! XD

Anyway, I think the site should show a picture of Hannah's mom holding a sign or blancing a sign on her palm that says "Something Maybe, click here to order it today!"

And then you can have a page of Hannah's mom biography. Then you can have another page which talks about SM. :) And you could have a blog page which brings readers to this blog! =)

The websites are candymadison.net and jacksonjamesonline.com and both link to the Something, Maybe page on your website.

I do think you should have a webpage because if people liked the book enough to try out the websites mentioned, they've probably already found the Something, Maybe page on your site.
Maybe you could have a page for each of her parents (and other characters too?) with their profiles and giving extra bits of info about them that didn't make it into the book. You could have each page be like the character, so Candy's would be pink and have pizza box pics and be blatantly 'self-advertising' and stuff.

A really cool thing would be if you wrote a 'bio' for each of them in their own words or had them 'answer' a set of interview questions or something. That way we'd get to know the characters better.

I love that you actually have linked to these adresses already though - it wouldn't even have occurred to me!

I went to candymadison.net which brought me to the Something Maybe page. I like that it links to the book's page, but I think it would be cool if both Candy and Jackson's site had stuff about them. That'd probably be a lot of work though to make fake pages for book characters, but I always appreciate when there's something like that to go along with the books I read. Maybe I've just had technology around too long and expect everyone to have a website, even fictional characters! (Which sadly, many fictional characters do)
I can't wait to read the rest of Something Maybe!

I found two.
candymadison.net and jacksonjamesonline.net. It redirects me to http://www.elizabethwrites.com/somethingmaybe.php.

You should teascreate a website about some of the trivias on the book! Some blurbs and teasers!! Maybe put in a bit of your pre-rewrites. I'm sure your fans would be intrigued to know more! To know how it all began and how it ends up the way it is now.

You could even add a playlist!! Ooh. I just love PLAYLIST!!

or it could be a bit like an interview with Candy and Jackson. To give the reader a more realistic touch with them.

Oh god. I am blabbing myself away. Please excuse me.

p/s; I think its great that you actually bought the domain names. because I surely would be searching about it. Yes, I am a geek like that.

Oh my, I hope Something, Maybe will be available in Malaysia! Or I will order it online even if it would cost me a fortune!

Candymadison.net links back to elizabethwrites and all the people that love the novel

i think it should actually be its own webpage. some authors like Micol Ostow have really created the webpages from her book and her characters "run" them and it could be fun.

I know its a lot of work so having it go back to your page is really fine too

Hi Elizabeth!

One of the websites mentioned is candymadison.net, and it takes you to your page for Something, Maybe. (Congrats on the AMAZING reviews, by the way!)

I think it would be interesting if it really did link to Candy's website, but one that was taken over by Hannah and/or Finn. They both seem so hilarious, it would be great to see their take on someone so over-the-top. Like funny photo captions, their thoughts on her acting resume, a rundown of Candy-sightings in Slaterville (which will also give some great background on the book, I think), and maybe even a tribute to BurgerTown -- for when Candy breaks her diet :-)

I have a feeling that I'll just want more Hannah and Finn by the time I finish the book, and this would be a fun way to keep up with them.

This was tougher than I thought! I'm Michelle and my email is paperback.pixie@gmail.com. Thanks!

Candymadison.net goes to your website's page about Something, Maybe.

I think Candymadison.net should have something about joining the Candy Club like Hannah mentioned, and a list of all the times Candy has been in Celeb Weekly.

I think that jacksonjamesonline.com should just be plastered with his name, and have the picture of him and baby Hannah.

Of course, when you click the picture on Jackson's or the Candy Club sign up on Candy's it should go to the Something, Maybe page :)

One of the websites is candymadison.net and it leads back to elizabethwrites.com/somethingmaybe.php to the book page.

A suggestion for a new link would be that it lead to a few fun quizzes on the book or maybe Candy's books/movies? You know, like, 'which character are you?' or 'In the book, Candy does what...' and some other interactive stuff 'cause they're always fun :) And providing the link back to elizabethwrites.com is a good idea so I think you should keep that too. Oh, and you could have some info on Candy, like a blog of her own, a short bio, some info on her book, etc. I'd be interested in Hannah's father's blog, too, to find out more about him.

Thanks :)

I think that candymadison.net linking back to the something maybe page makes a lot of sense. On the one hand, it might be cool to have a website actually set up for Candy or Jackson, but on the other hand, as a reader I tend to just sort of skip past the websites that authors design for their characters. In general, I'd much prefer to visit the author's site and find more content than to see a character's website.

The one exception to that, for me, is when the book is part of a series, which tends to inspire a little bit more in terms of world building, etc. Fantasy series especially, I think, can sometimes benefit from an in-world website for fans, but with a stand-alone novel set in the contemporary real world, I don't think it would be too much of a draw.

Candymadison.net goes back to www.elizabethwrites.com/somethingmaybe. Congrats on all the amazing reviews you got by the way.

It would be really awesome if you put like a chapter from Candy's book so that readers could go see it and read it. That would be hilarious and really cool.It would also be cool if you saw the video for the super bowl Candy made.Even if it not real.

(ok, I'm not trying to enter twice or anything, but I thought of something else) Maybe you could link to a page for Candy and one for Jackson and so on, and you could have lots of other characters describe them - like, in 30 words, Hannah says Candy is... and in 30 words, Jackson says Candy is... That way we can get to know the characters, but also their releationships with each other. Plus it could be pretty funny especially with characters describing others they didn't like, but wouldn't be too much work for you.
That's it now I promise =)

i think it would be really cool if candymadison.net was a blog written by hannah talking about things that her mom does or things that she was in (basically candy madison's home life from her daughter's perspective) i would love to know more about candy because she sounds like an interesting person.
i'm thinking that it should be glittery and pink and that candy madison should be spelled out with m&m's

Candymadison.net is the first one to appear, and right now it goes to the page on your site for Something, Maybe.

If you made it look like it was a real site, but not so realistic that people would be fooled, it would be a great way to promote the book - sort of like what was done for Micol Ostow's Bradford novels. You could have a mini-network of sites related to the book!

The Candy Madison site could have some fake magazine articles and some bits and pieces of things that are related to the book.

And a site just for Something, Maybe would be great too! All the sites could be linked together!

By this point at lot of people have listed the site it goes to candymadison.net and redirects to http://www.elizabethwrites.com/somethingmaybe.pdf.

While I was really upset when it stopped at page 18 I think it would cool if the pages were like they are in the book. You can link to it from your main website and it can serve to interest people into going out and getting the book to find out what all it is about and backstory behind the characters. Place hidden sections with games or excerpts. It could be really cool and serve as an extension of the book for those that have read it and an introduction for those that havent.

There are two links and candymadison.net led me to the Something, Maybe page.

I think you should have a book trailer and a playlist on the page. There'll be cool if there're pictures of Candy and the cover of her book, her autograph and the likes.

I love quizzes too. You can put "how well do you know Something, Maybe/Hannah/Candy/Jason" quizzes after the book is released and whoever gets the perfect score gets a bookplate or something ^^

There must be alternate covers of Something, Maybe before you got the final ones right? You should put em up too.
