13 Days to Something, Maybe! (and travel)

Wednesday, March 11, 2009

Less than two weeks till Something, Maybe!

In the book, Hannah does end up seeing her father, Jackson, in New York City. Here's a little bit about that:

I've always known Slaterville is one of those places you pass on the highway that looks like everywhere else, that there's nothing special about it, but I hadn't realized how slow it is. Everyone in the train station, with the exception of people like me, moves like they have somewhere to be, and they have to be there now.

And Jackson isn't here.

I try to ignore the small but miserable voice that starts howling inside me, one that's wailing at the unfairness of it all, of Jackson letting me down again. Of Jackson not loving me. I try to push away what's left of the little girl who once thought she was a princess, but it's hard.

Five years, and I still haven't managed to get rid of her.

And then I see an enormous guy, so tall he doesn't even seem human, holding a sign that says HANNAH.

I walk over to him slowly, and when I'm halfway there he says, "Hannah?"

"That's me," I say. "I guess Jackson sent you. One of his girlfriends' breasts spring a leak or something?"

The guy doesn't even crack a smile. "Mr. James is outside," he says. "Come with me, please."

There's more, of course, but now let's talk about you!

New York is one of my favorite places to visit--what's yours? Tell me your favorite place to go--or where you wish you could--by midnight tonight and you could win a copy of Suzanne Supplee's Artichoke's Heart! The usual rules apply: the winner will be picked at random, please remember to leave a way for me to contact you, only one entry per person, and yep, you can enter if you live overseas and/or if you've won something me from me before. Also, congrats to yesterday's winner, Adele!

And because I really miss sharing links, here's a few worth checking out:

Agent Nathan Bransford offers Ten Commandments for the Happy Writer

Great article about a great book, Jay Asher's Thirteen Reasons Why, and the success it's found

And not at all about writing or publishing, but I can't not share this one: a fabulous article about--imo--*the* best couple on television--The Office's Jim and Pam and how the show has managed to make them even better now that they're together

New York is wonderful! A place I wish I could go, though, is San Francisco. I've never been there but I've heard it's fantastic from everyone who has.

My fave place would be Australia! I love Gold Coast. It was so fun there! :) I love all the rides at Movie World. The shops there are pretty cool too.

I really want to go to NYC. It's a shopper's heaven there. And who knows? I might walk into a shop and spot Miley Cyrus! x)

My favorite place to be is in Chino Hills, California, where my relatives are. I love those hills and seeing the mountains in the backdrop, but my absolute favorite sight is the city lights in the dark. It's like the night sky, but on ground. Soooo pretty!

My favorite place to go isn't even a city, although it's called the "city of books". My favorite place is Powell's Bookstore. I could live there, it's so amazing. It's book heaven. :)

If I could choose a place to travel to it would be Germany. I love the culture, food, and country.

My favourite place is Turkey. As well as great people and stuff to do, the scenery is amazing and the sky is unpolluted so you can see all the stars at night. It's beautiful.

Goodness. I love cities. All of them. I do. I'm particularly fond of New York and Boston. I live near Philly so I've been getting to know that as well, and I want to know DC as well!

I love visiting Capetown - and am very sad that my parents have moved back to the US and taken away my ready-made excuse to visit South Africa once a year! At least it means I get to see my family more than once a year...

Do nonexistant (maybe) places count? Because if I could visit anywhere, I'd go to Atlantis. Or a distant planet.
