14 Days to Something, Maybe!

Tuesday, March 10, 2009

Thanks for being so nice about my first ever attempt at video blogging! And congrats to Purdypirate, who won the ARC of Fragile Eternity.

I don't normally talk about my own writing here, but with two weeks (!!) to go until Something, Maybe is in stores, I thought it might be interesting. (Please feel free to tell me otherwise!)

Anyway.

When I wrote Something, Maybe, I'd finished writing Perfect You and another book which is under contract and I desperately wanted to write a love story. I mean, we're talking me walking around the house muttering, "Love story! I just want to write a love story! Something sweet! Something fun!"**

But all my ideas weren't working. At all.

And then for some reason, I thought: Live! Nude! Mom. (and for real, no idea why it popped into my head, but I'm so glad it did) and all of a sudden, bam! Hannah was there and then Candy and Jackson and Teagan showed up, with Josh and Finn appearing soon after. I scribbled down everything I thought of and then started to write.

And when I was done, I had to rewrite the whole thing. Twice. That's right--the whole book. (And this was before it even got to my editor, where even more rewriting occurred!)

I admit, I'm not a huge fan of the rewrite. I do it all the time--okay, I've done it with every. single. book.--and it's certainly necessary, but if I could get a story right on the first try, I would *love* that. But rewriting is a enormous and necessary part of writing, and rewriting Something, Maybe showed me that even when you undo everything, you can put it back together again.

So in honor of all that undoing, today I'm giving away a copy of Undone by Brooke Taylor. For your chance to win, just leave a comment telling me about a time you've had to do something over again by midnight tonight and then I'll pick one name at random and that person will win the book!

**Of course, after writing my sweet love story, what happened next? Living Dead Girl.

Eye liner - over and over and over again - I should give up, I should have succeeded with perseverance alone but I haven't. Sigh.

Of course it's interesting hearing about you! We are on your blog after all, which we wouldn't be if we weren't interested =)
Although having the words Live! Nude! Mom! just pop in your head is a little disturbing...

Something I've had to do over and over was my graphics coursework. Anyone who has drawn knows how difficult it is to get a picture right. Then I had to rub the pencil out until it was the faintest of outlines and ink over it, wait until the ink had dried and fill in the colour with marker pens, several times to achive a 3D effect. Then finish it off with coloured pencil. I hated each design by the time I'd finished it =)

One time in high school, I procrastinated my 10-page (longest paper I'd ever written at that point) paper on Mark Twain until the day before and finished it that night. And then the next day, when I went to print it, it had disappeared. Gone. Poof. I had to rewrite the entire thing before I went to bed. There were tears.

I had to do freshman AND sophomore years of college all over again when I transferred universities. It wasn't so bad. I met really great people and graduated with honors despite the do-over.

Making pancakes. That's the only thing that pops into my mind now. I could never make those so I had to do over and over again. I wasted too much flour and eggs *sighs*

One time I had to write a paper, I believe it was for history. I wrote the whole entire thing and then, I forgot to save it but I didn't write any of it down on a separate peice of paper before I started typing it. So, I had to rewright the whole thing from memory. I didn't go to bed until 3O'clock in the morning. What's worse is that I got a C on the paper! :( I guess that's what I get for waiting until the last minute!

I remember when I was in college, I had to re-do my media coursework about ten times. I just couldn't get it how I wanted it. It was so frustrating!

I had to do my junior year of high school over again when I went overseas to do a two-year programme, since my classes were completely different. But it was a really great programme, and I met a lot of wonderful people, so it was worth it.

Brushing my teeth. I'm always brushing my teeth and then being offered something absolutely delicious (or...you know, anything with chocolate in it) and having to run and brush all over again.

One thing which I have had to do over and over is gluten-free baking. It is definitely something that continuously has to be experimented with. Trying to create a tofu icing has been even more of a struggle, but I keep on trying to perfect it.

a piece of code, you think you've done it right and at the first run it really looks like it's doing what it's supposed to do and then it kind of doesn't work with some data and then the performance is totally bleah and then the customer tells you that they actually what something totally different!! pure hell!

HTML and JavaScript codes. I am not kidding one period or letter that isn't capitolized will screw the entire thing up and sometimes no matter how long you stare at teh screen you just dont know whats wrong... So you end up just starting all over. It's maddening.

I wrote this really extensive poem. But then I felt a need to change the first few lines, and that meant I had to change the next and the next...

The final result was a different poem with the same story, if that makes sense.

Redoing my final essay for English. Oh jesus christ, it was terrible. I was working on it for six hours or so and it was plugged to my USB. I *stupidly* did not save it. So removing the stick without actually clicking the safely remove button, I LOST EVERYTHING! It was horrible! It was due in two days so I had to beg my teachers to excuse me from class so I could work on it.

I was in a creative writing class, I wrote a 10 page short story that took the whole semester, then my computer crashed and I didn't have it backed up. I ended up having to retake the class because there was no way for me to redo the work that quickly.

NOOO, it's 12:03! I'm too late then? I hope not, but I'll just this a try :)

Hmm, something I've had to do over and over again.. I have way too many things that I re-do. One of them is having to do a methodology in math over again (pure torture, I hate writing those things!). Also sometimes I lose a worksheet in school so I have to re-do the worksheet.
