18 Days to Something, Maybe!

Friday, March 06, 2009

Just a brief countdown break--I found out that Living Dead Girl is part of the 2009 New York Public Library's Stuff for the Teen Age. WHOOO! (And thank you, NYPL!)

Okay, now back to Something, Maybe. Yesterday's winner was Avni, and today's winner--well, you know the drill!

Today I thought I'd talk a little about Candy, Hannah's mom. If you've read the first couple of chapters (which you can here or here), you've met her, and she's definitely not your average mom! But there is more to her than meets the eye, and so I thought I'd share five things about her:

--She was nineteen when she met Jackson, Hannah's father, at his birthday party, and twenty-one when he kicked her out of his house--and life. She was also pregnant with Hannah.

-- She and Hannah lived in Queens for a while, and that was the happiest time of Candy's entire life.

--She can cook exactly two things: boxed mac and cheese and grilled cheese sandwiches.

--The sitcom Candy was on, Cowboy Dad, ran for eighteen episodes. Twenty-two were filmed, and the whole show was eventually released on DVD. It's become something of a cult favorite, mostly due to the "outfit" Candy wore in each episode. (Bonus feature (!): The sitcom is mentioned in the book, but the number of episodes, why it became a cult favorite, and how Candy felt about the main character's catch phrase of "Yee-haw!" (she *hated* it) is something I wrote about very early on and then cut.)

--Here's how--and why--Candy decided she and Hannah would live where they do:

We drove straight down the East Coast until one night on the interstate we passed a man in a tow truck talking to a woman whose car had broken down on the side of the road.

"We're here," Mom said, and got off at the next exit.

That's how we ended up in Slaterville. Not because Mom wanted to be here, but because for just a moment, she saw something that reminded her of Jose, that reminded her of the life she'd had.

Candy also wrote an autobiography, which is mentioned in the book, but as it's fictional I can't give that away! Instead, I'll be giving away a copy of Jake Coburn's Lovesick -- just leave a comment by midnight tonight with the title of Candy's autobiography. (Hint: it's mentioned in the excerpt that's been posted!)

18 Days!!

In a strange way as dippy as Hannah's mom Candy seems...you've managed to humanize her and make me wonder more about her. That is great writing. (Hugs)Indigo

It's called "Candy Madison: Taking It All Off."

If my mother wrote (or rather, had it ghost-written for her) a book like that, I'd probably die of embarrassment.
