19 Days to Something, Maybe!

Thursday, March 05, 2009

Yesterday's winner was Lisa and today's winner--well, that could be YOU!

When I wrote Something, Maybe, I really wanted to write a flat-out love story, and a lot of the book is about Hannah and her feelings for Josh, her co-worker, who, as Hannah says is, "smart, kind, and best of all, isn't a complete dog like every other guy in the whole world. "

The book also is about Hannah and Finn, her other co-worker. Hannah puts up with Finn--barely--"he's your average 17-year-old Slaterville male, and they can be described in one word. Bleagh."

But it turns out there's more to Finn than Hannah thinks, and she starts to see that. Here's a little bit from later on in the book:

I pick the break room, where I can sit alone without anyone possibly seeing me sitting alone. Like, say, Josh when he gets to work. Plus since I haven't actually started work yet, I won't lose any pay, and...well, that's about all sitting in here has got going for it. The room itself is as depressing as ever, cinderblock walls, beat-up chair, hideous fuzzy orange sofa with Finn--

With Finn lying on it, reading a thick book with one of those "I'm a classic!" covers. (You know the ones I mean--they've all got dark backgrounds with a picture of an old woman or flowers or something. Never anything good.)

"Are you reading?" I say. It's not that I don't think Finn can read or anything, but it's just---well, not what I expected to see. I figured Finn spent his spare time doing whatever it is guys who aren't Josh do when they aren't in school. Burping, or something.

There's more to the scene, and if you leave a comment by midnight tonight, you could win a signed copy of a draft of this scene, complete with my scribblings about things that needed to be changed! Or, if you don't want that, you can have a copy of Angela Morrison's Taken By Storm.

Remember, just leave a comment (although I wouldn't mind hearing what you think of this little bit of a scene I've shared!) by midnight, and then I'll draw one person's name at random and that person will win a signed draft page of this scene! (Or the book--winner's choice!) And, as always, all the other usual rules apply.

It's really starting to hit me that the book is going to be here soon--19 Days YAY!!!

Ah! I love it! I can't wait to read this.

And I love that thing about the covers. Covers for classics *can* be so horrible.

I just read the synopsis of Something, Maybe and it made me think of the movie House Bunny! I can imagine Hannah's dad living in the mansion in the show.

I'm now 100,000,000 times more excited! :D :D :D

I love that you actually voiced what I've always thought, the covers for classics were somewhat hideaous.

I think at this point I find some attraction to Finn. There is something about a guy who can be a total goof-ball, yet loves to veg out and read. I married a musician that I would love (strongly) to see find the same interest in books I do. Indigo

The covers on classics always put me off. I can't help but judge a book by it's cover even though I try not too!

Great excerpt, I can't wait for more!

Haha, I like the excerpt!

"With Finn lying on it, reading a thick book with one of those "I'm a classics!" covers. (You know the ones I mean--they've all got dark backgrounds with a picture of an old woman or flowers or something. Never anything good.)"

I know what you/she means, about how some titles just scream "classic!". Surprisingly, I actually haven't read that many. I mean, I have read Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Fitzgerald's Great Gatsby, and such. But like, I haven't really read that many classics. I'll have to get into that this summer or something ;) Although it'll probably be really busy. Quite a shame. :(

Anyway, really witty excerpt! Super exciting, that there's only 19 days and counting now!

and i know exactly how Hannah feels. i hate the covers of the 'classic' type books.
they have tis completely stereotypical, usually boring look to them.

Finn obviously holds some hidden charms; Hannah, I'm sure will soon discover his finer qualities - which include more than just burping! You've captured the moment of discovery and surprise so neatly in this cinderblocked, fuzzy orange sofa break room. Vivid image of cruddy furniture, too.

I like the end of this scene that you shared with us, and I hope it leads to what I think it leads into! If not, that's okay too... But it makes me wonder if I ever thought that about 2 boys...
