20 Days to Something, Maybe!

Wednesday, March 04, 2009

Today...hmm.

You know what? Today, I'm going to talk about Hannah's job.

When I started writing Something, Maybe, I knew money was going to be tight for Hannah and her mom, and I knew Hannah would have a job. And I wondered what it would be, and then I remembered something I'd read.

Years ago, I read an article about a certain fast-food restaurant experimenting with centralizing all their order-taking in one location, and the idea that you could be placing an order for a burger and be talking to someone hundreds of miles away fascinated me. So I saved the article, not knowing if I'd ever use it.

Turns out I did, and that's how Hannah ended up with her unusual--but very real--job of taking burger orders for customers she never ever sees! (And of course, I decided to mix things up by giving her two very cute co-workers, but I'll talk about them later.)

So for today's contest--what's the strangest job you've ever heard of someone having, or the strangest job you've ever had? Let me know by midnight tonight and you could win a copy of She's So Money by Cherry Cheva. The usual rules apply--winner chosen at random, yes, you can enter if you live overseas--and don't forget to leave a way for me to contact you if you win!

Congrats to yesterday's winner, Erika Lynn....and 20 days to go!!

The oddest job I have ever heard of is an odor tester. I can't even imagine the smells they have to smell!

There are a lot of odd jobs out there but I think the oddest one I have heard of would be Dice Inspector. All they pretty much do is check for lopsidedness and stuff like that. I mean come on how boring and weird is that?

Hi Elizabeth,

Can I just say that I LOVE your blog, and your contests are more than just fun! I'm here every day now - great way to promote your work!

Oddest job was one I heard about this morning on the radio as I drove to work. It's 50 jobs in 50 states. A guy is working for a week or so doing whatever industry is most prevalent in each state. So far he's been a corn farmer in Nebraska and a wedding planner in Las Vegas. He's currently working as a marine biologist in the Seattle area. There you go! For anyone who's worked a long time - that's a pretty odd but interesting way to approach work.

I never really had a crazy job, i am a waitress all the way but I grew up in a really small rural town and so many people I went to HS with would get up and work on the family farms before school started. Nothing like feeding the pigs and milking the cows before first period chemistry

I fully believe that Mike Rowe has had some of the strangest jobs ever. On his show, Dirty Jobs, he has gone through almost every weird job there is, including somewhere where they take cow poo (haha) and make it into flower pots. Now that's what I call odd! :)

Once I met a gait analyst. When he first said it I thought that maybe he analyzed gates - how well they swing open, whether their latches work. etc. But it turns out he analyzed the way people walk so that better prosthetics can be made - and that's way cooler than a gate analyst.

One of the weirdest jobs I've ever heard about is a pig walker. I remember seeing an article about it on the cover of a farming mag at work, and I LOL'd all day!

I love the idea that fast food call centres exist somewhere. The most boring job I've heard of is dictionary proof reader. On the plus side,it might be kind of fun to learn new words every day.

The strangest job I've ever heard of is the cheese sprayer. I saw it on Food Network's Unwrapped and all I could think about was the crazy amount of chemicals that I eat everytime I have a cheeto or cheese puff. They're still delicious though!

I visited the Ben & Jerry's factory in Vermont, and apparently they have a parent whose job is to CUT open the occasional ice cream container (with the ice cream inside), quarter it, and try a scoop of ice cream out of every quarter. Taste control or something. Anyway, I remember thinking it was so much fun.

probably odor testers, but someone said that already.
or working in a dry cleaners.
it seems ordinary,
but spending your days cleaning other people's clothes?
eek.

I'd say that being one of those people who flies blimps at football games would be a pretty strange job. Another weird one is being a weed farmer. Yes, they grow weeds. On purpose.

I have never had a job that was anything other than normal but I find it odd that my friend willingly works on a horse farm cleaning up after the horses. :]

Thanks for the contest. I can't wait for Something, Maybe to be out so I can read it.
