how NOT to bake a cake

Wednesday, May 06, 2009

Okay, last night I attempted to turn my new favorite cookie recipe into a cake. Everything went well at first--when I took it out of the oven, it looked gorgeous, but then I turned it over and put it on a cooling rack (I'd baked it in bundt pan*) the middle fell out.

Yep, that's right. I lost half my cake JUST BY TURNING IT OVER. Not one of my better attempts. Still, I salvaged what I could, baked it a while longer, and then took out what was left (and it came out in pieces) and put it in a pan. My husband came into "help" and once I managed to get him to stop eating, I had a piece myself and you know what? Disaster that it is--and it really isn't a cake, it's just a collection of cake pieces in a cake pan--it's really REALLY good. Next time I'm going to try baking it in cake tins, so hopefully it will cook more evenly.

(*No, I don't know why I did this either. If you're turning a cookie into a cake, wouldn't you want to try baking it in something nice and flat? At least this wasn't anywhere near as bad as the first time I made bread, where I followed the instructions and ended up with....a rock of dough. Seriously, that thing could have been a door stopper.)

Other things:

I admit, I have always, ALWAYS wanted someone to create a facebook/goodreads/myspace/etc group for my books. It's--well, okay, it's amazingly flattering and also I love seeing people get together on groups/communities/etc for other authors and talking about their books. And so imagine my surprise (and the happy squeaking noises I made) when I saw that the fabtastic Katy had created the goodreads Elizabeth Scott Fans group. In a admittedly shameless attempt to get people to join, if membership hits 25 people by the beginning of next week (and it's so easy to join--you just have to click here!), I will totally post something totally top secret and just for the group. (I said it was shameless! But for real, I will do it. So if you want a sneak peak at one of my 2010 books, you should join....)

The Sarah Dessen Diarist is having a month long celebration of Sarah Dessen, her books, and her birthday! Loads of YA bloggers and authors are participating, and the very first entry is up here. So go, and celebrate the works and general awesomeness of Sarah Dessen!

A really interesting article about one of James Patterson's collaborators--I admit, I haven't read anything by James Patterson, but if he's earning royalties on one out of every fifteen hardcovers published in the United States, um, WOW.

Tess Gerritsen on not taking advice--be sure to check out the comments too--lots of thoughts about her post (which I think is dead on--persistence is good and necessary, but you also have to realize that "even though writing may be a solitary profession, the business of publishing is not. ")

And don't forget that you have until midnight est tonight to ask me a question--and maybe win one of ten free books! (And yes, you can enter if you live overseas)

In my family, no matter how disasterous the cake turned out, there will always be someone to eat it! Thanks for sharing your story!

I'm sorry the cake didn't turn out to be a perfect one. But at least it's still edible right? I cannot remember a thing I baked that can be eaten haha.

I've just joined the goodreads group! Thanks for the link ^^
