Wait and Win, or contest time!

Thursday, August 20, 2009

I was stuck in traffic for quite a while yesterday morning and then again in the evening and it got me thinking about what people do to pass the time when they're waiting for something or someone. I like to read, although not while driving! Driving is when I tend to bellow along to whatever cd I'm listening to (I never did upgrade to an ipod for my car. Just call me DinoElizabeth!) or think about what I'm writing or would like to be writing.

And what does all this lead to?

A contest, of course! (I even have a name for it--Wait and Win!)

Tell me what YOU like to do when you're stuck waiting--do you read, send texts, deal with homework, listen to music, or watch videos/tv/movies? You tell me what you do when you're waiting for someone or something by midnight EST tomorrow, August 21st, and then I'll pick one name at random and that person will win *three* books: Going Too Far by Jennifer Echols, Fairest Of Them All by Jan Blazanin, and Shrinking Violet by Danielle Joseph!

So remember, leave your comment by midnight EST tomorrow and you could win all three books! (And yes, this contest is open to anyone, even those living overseas)

And you know me--I have links to share too:

Check out this blog post on planning a series -- the author, Joshua Palmatier, is a "pantser" or a writer who tends to work without an outline, and how he makes this work when he writes series novels is super interesting.

Super advice from Kate Elliott at the Science Fiction and Fantasy Novelists' blog on Field of Vision -- "Be aware of what is going on in the genre."

A pdf about how people in the publishing industry including editors, salespeople, agents, and writers use twitter--there's even sections on booksellers and bloggers! (as a heads up, there is an ad for a "tweet camp" but it's at the end)

Thoughtful and thought-provking post on "writing popular"

Nicola Morgan on how to make a publisher say yes
-- ""How to make a publisher say yes" is not the best question.
The best question is "why do publishers usually say no?""
A long post, but a great one and very much worth reading.

Don't forget, you have until midnight EST tomorrow night, the 21st, to enter the Wait and Win Contest!

I read anytime I'm waiting for something. Sometimes I'll play Solitaire on my ipod but I mostly read. It's the easiest and most enjoyable way to pass time. I love it!

When I'm waiting, I usually people watch :) It's great fun. And, thanks to LOOKING FOR ALASKA, I usually make up backgrounds/stories for all the people around me. It's a fun way to pass the time, and also exercise your creativity.

Thanks for the contest, as always!

It depends on where I am. If I'm at home...I'll probably be on my computer, playing Spider Solitaire and listening to music. Maybe reading. If I'm away, I'm probably typing up texts to Twitter but not sending them, listening to my MP3 player, or trying to read (if I have a book).

Music and read! I've been known to listen for 5 hours while driving to a destination. I can never read while moving so that's usually when I sit (like when my mom's getting a facial--2 and a half hours).

I ALWAYS carry a book with me. It does make my purse a little heavier sometimes, but it's always worth it when I have to end up waiting somewhere!

Sometimes, I just listen to music on my ipod or car stereo (traffic). But books are always my first choice!

When I'm at the doctor/dentist office I always make sure I have a book on me because well, magazines suck in the waiting room. (I think it's some kind of conspirecy.) If I'm just waiting around for people, I'm always fidgeting on my phone whether I'm texting someone or getting on the net just to pass the time.

Also I had to share, my aunt will acutally drive and read - scares the crap out of me.

When I have to wait, I plan. I start thinking exactly what I will do when I get wherever I'm going. If someone keeps me waiting, I sometimes think about what I'll say to them for keeping me waiting. I never say what I'm thinking, of course, but it makes me feel better. Especially at the dentist.

When I'm waiting on something I usually get REALLY frustrated and start using language that is prohibited from school and rolling my eyes and yelling at the people who are in front of me in the car like they can hear me.

Well that's what I do when I'm stuck in traffic.
