what do 13 and a box of books have in common? keep reading and find out!

Monday, August 10, 2009

I think it's time for another contest (what? I can't help it--I love them!) and so this week I'm giving away a box full of hardcovers, paperbacks, and ARCs to one lucky winner--and I bet from the book on the top of the box, you might have an idea of what the contest is...**

That's right! I want thirteen reasons why you'd like to have these books. I'll be extra impressed if you can start each of the thirteen reasons with a different letter of the alphabet (either A-M or Z-N, if you want to be really daring!)

Leave your thirteen reasons by midnight EST this Thursday, August 13th (you know I had to pick that date!!) and then I'll pick my favorite list of reasons and that person will get all the books! And because there are so many books, this contest is only open to people who have a US mailing addy.

Can't wait to read your thirteen reasons!!!

i've wanted to read Thirteen Reasons Why for so long.
let's see...
Thirteen Reasons Why I Need These Books

1. Reading makes me happy.
2. I like being happy.
3. Getting books without having to buy them makes me happy.
4. Books in general make me happy.
5. You and your books make me happy, and the fact that you're throwing a contest makes me happy.
6. The sixth reason why i need these books is because my mom is clipping her toenails in her bedroom and if i had these books, i'd be reading in my room instead of listening to her clip her toenails.
7. Another distraction from my hectic life.
8. School is coming, i need more books to escape into.
9. If I win these books, i won't have to buy any more books for quite a while and i can instead buy STARBUCKS!
10. I like Starbucks.
11. Even if I can't entirely see what all those books are, I'm sure they're all amazing.
12. Amazing books are amazing.
13. You're amazing.

whoa. that was much harder than i thought it would be.
eek.

The Th1rteen R3asons why I want free books?

1. I have finished my summer reading books for school and want something fun to read before school gets back in. Don’t I deserve something fun to read after reading IN COLD BLOOD and THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN?
2. Winning free books rather than paying for them means I don’t have to ask my parents for more money. And who wants to make their parents mad by asking for money?
3. And by not asking them for money, I don’t have to do extra chores and therefore have more time to read. Isn’t it wonderful, for me, a teenager, to spend my time reading rather than what other teenagers do?
4. Now that I am buying a new bookcase, I will have room for more books that needs to be filled. Shouldn’t all bookshelves be filled completely?
5. The space can easily be filled by winning these books and I won’t have to buy them (see reasons 2 and 3). Don’t I deserve to win some free books when I don’t have any more money to buy books?
6. The bookshelf will be lonely without these books. You don’t want it to be lonely, do you?
7. Here and now, I’m spending my time to make these thirteen reasons. That’s a pretty good reason, isn’t it?
8. Even if I don’t enjoy all the books in the box, I will donate them to my school’s library or to the other people in our reading group (I do this regularly throughout the year as well). I’m sharing the wealth, isn’t that something to smile about?
9. Books are something that make a strong impact in my life, as I plan to be an author myself someday. Shouldn’t I get these books, as research for my future goal?
10. Only an author as wonderful as yourself (I own almost all your books!) is kind enough to give this chance for so many books. Come on, doesn’t flattery work in today’s day and age?
11. Oh em gee! I’m willing to sound like a cheerleader because I’m super excited about this contest. Seriously, doesn’t a girl who is willing to publicly (on the internet) say (write) OMG and spell it out deserve to win something?
12. K is a very hard letter to think of a reason, so I’m pretending it’s a C. Contests are so much fun and I will make a video of myself receiving/opening this box of books if I win and post it on youtube. Come on, don’t you want to see me jumping up and down and running out to get the package and then fighting with that packing tape in order to get it open? You know you do, you know you do.
13. So now, I’ve reached the end of my th1rteen r3asons and want you to notice that I took the time to spell out a special something with the first letters of each of my reasons. Creativity should get something, shouldn’t it?

There it is, spelled out plain and simple if you read it down. I WANT THE BOOKS. Thank you so much for this fun contest, though it was kind of hard to think of the reasons.

9. My toddler daughter recently destroyed some of the books I own. By 'destroy' I mean she used them to practice her coloring skills.
10. I's sad I still have holes in my bookshelf.
11. I cant think of another reason so I need to read to enhance my thinking.
12. I will recycle the box!
13. Mmm.. All of the above.

Thirteen Reasons Why I should Win This Contest:

1. Reading is one of my favorite joys in life. You wouldn't want to deprive a girl of one of her favorite things, now would you?
2. The economy is horrible, which means that I can't buy books that often...which means that I can't READ that often. This is a problem.
3. My little sister often takes my books and I never see them again, leaving me with, again, nothing to read.
4. Summer reading: the choices that I have to read are very boring...I need literature that is new and exciting! Otherwise, I may not survive.
5. Because of the fact that you are one of my favorite authors, I am confident that the books you are giving away are worthwhile and I would love to see what they all are.
6. Public Libraries in our city are not adequate. People write inside of the books, therefore ruining any chance that I have of reading them all the way through. In order to prevent myself from witnessing this horrible offense, I need to have this wonderful box of thirteen books.
7. Consider the following: no one in our generation (teenagers) really reads anymore. If I had thirteen new books, then I would be able to set an example for my classmates at school.
8. Gas is expensive, and I need to use gas to get to the bookstore. If I win this contest I can use the gas money for something even MORE important...like getting to school on time.
9. You know, I have never actually really won anything. It would be nice to win a big contest like this (if anything, just so I can say HA! to my best friend who always teases me about it)
10. University is expensive. I think it's important for me to go there, don't you? Any money I can save by winning FREE BOOKS! will help me get there sooner!
11. Another reason I should win this contest is because I always enter every contest you throw...it's about time, don't you think?
12. Wouldn't you know...I am an aspiring writer myself, so these books would help me to observe the qualities of other writers' works and use some of their wonderful techniques in my OWN writing. Who knows? Maybe one day, you could be reading one of MY books. wouldn't that be neat?
13. I am an awesome person. Enough said :)

5. Enjoys reading at the beach (go all the time :)).
6. Free things are awesome.
7. Going on vaction to Ohio soon...and don't want to bring libary books with me (Last time I did and, urg)
8. Had tv brake the other day (and other tv has only had disney channel and football on the last 2 days. Going. Crazy.)
9. Intersted in learning new things, like you do in every book you read.
10. Job at camp ends in a couple of days, so I need something to do.
11. Keeps reading awesome reviews that make me want to give my own awesome reviews.
12. Latly gave away a lot of books to chairty (I know its for a good cause, but it hurt me to do so)
13. Makes me really, really love you if I win.

And, A-M!

1. I'm a high school English teacher trying to fill my classroom library with books my students like to read.

2. I personally LOVE YA lit myself, so I like to read the books I get for them, too.

3. When I read them first, I am able to give them personalized recommendations on things they may like, and this gets them coming back to me and asking for more books.

4. My goal as a teacher is to get my kids excited about reading when they would rather be watching TV or making out with each other behind the gym. It is easier to get them excited about books that are brand new and clean and look nice than it is to get them excited about used books. They just like stuff that looks new and nice.

5. I will get to run around my classroom like a dork, jumping around yelling about the box of books I won, and my students will stare at me like I'm insane, but secretly think it's kinda cool that I get so excited about reading.

6. I bet there is at least one book in there that would capture the attention of one of my reluctant readers and spark an interest in reading.

7. I bet there is at least one book in there that would ignite a growing interest in writing in one of my students and get him/her writing more seriously.

8. I'm trying to read 200 books this year, and having a nice box like that would sure help me get there.

9. I have a book blog (http://www.jessicaisreading.blogspot.com) where I review all the books I read, and I bet there are some in there that I haven't read yet that are just begging to be reviewed.

10. Teachers don't make a lot, and I have to buy the books for my classroom library with my own money. I currently have over 400 books I have bought myself, but it sure would be a nice change to get some freebies, so I could spend my $$ on something else for my classroom.

11. My husband yells at me when I buy new books for my classroom, but he can't say anything if I get them for free, can he?

12. Our school just made all of our class periods 20 minutes longer...just enough to have time to read every single day! I will need lots of books to keep the students reading something they are interested in every day.

13. Giving the books to someone else will benefit ONE lucky person. Giving the books to me will benefit 200 lucky students who get to share my awesome classroom library. :-D

8. S - Still trying to think of more reasons
9. R - Really want to see this batch when I go over to Cali at the end of August
10. Q - Queen of books!
11. P - Packages with books inside makes me the happiest!

13 reasons Why I NEED these books.

1. Nothing in my life makes me happier than getting books to read. (Maybe kitties, but it's close.)

2. On some nights I can't sleep because I have a huge fear my house in going to get broken into, so I read to calm myself down. (It always helps.)

3. People don't seem to like me so I turn to books from comfort, and to give me something to do.

4. Quickly I get bored when I'm alone or there is nothing to do. And not having many friends, I read books to cure my boringness.

5. Recently my aunt got sick and she was my source of book getting, so now I won't be getting books for awhile.

6. "Something, Maybe" is my favorite book. I've read it three times and would love if the amazing author sent me these books.

7. Time is ticking before summer is over (TWO WEEKS) and when I go back to school, I'll need plenty of books since I read more then one book and have no books at home to start of with.

8. Usually my older sister annoys me so much tat I want to rip my frizzy hair out. To refrain, I usually read to calm myself down and stay away from her.

9. Very often, my age, 13, isn't a good age to have an obsession with reading and buying books since I don't have a job.

10. When I ask for books I usually get in trouble because I just got some. (Maybe because I only get a couple and am done within a weeks time.)

11. Xour (the x is silent) library never has any of the books I want so I have to wait for 1 to 2 weeks from the hooligans in my town to bring them back, overdue.

12. You wouldn't believe how much I hate library books. Other people have touched them, and ever since I got meningitis I'm weird about germs.

13. ZZzz...I"m tired from writing all of these, so I love you EliZabeth. You are my hero, and would be even more if you picked me.

13 reasons I want a box full of books:

1. All my favorite television shows are still on hiatus for the summer, so I could definitely use some things to read while I await the return of Lost, One Tree, and Gossip Girl.

2. Books offer a great way to escape reality; thirteen books offer an even better escape.

3. Cash is short this summer, so free books are especially welcome.

4. Dani isn't here to steal the books from me, so you know they'd be safe with me.

5. Each time I saw the books I would be reminded of your generosity and it would bring a smile to my face and the world needs more smiles.

6. Flo (that's me!) loves reading!!

7. Glacier caps are reportedly melting, so I will need lots of things to entertain myself with when the sea level rises and I am not longer able to venture out my door (if this does not occur in my lifetime, the books will be of use to my descendants).

8. Having thirteen new books would give me an even better excuse to avoid the 100 degree weather waiting outside.

9. I enjoy winning - I guess it's the competitive nature coming out.

10. Just because I'm 24 years old doesn't mean I do not love young adult books (because I totally do).

11. Krispy Kreme doughnuts and books go together like peaches and cream and it just so happens that I live a block away from Krispy Kreme (cash isn't so low that I cannot afford a hot doughnut now... brb).

12. Lately I have been stuck in a funk during which I read the same books over and over, so winning the box of books would offer me more of a selection when I want to read.

13. My sister absolutely adores you, so it would be awesome if I impressed her by winning this contest!

Zealously love books

Young adult novels are timeless

Xenophobia is knocking on my door because I'll be sad if I don't win (couldn't think of any X words! So I went the morbid approach lol)

Will send you chocolate should I win

Very much would like to somehow spend the last few days of summer kicking back and enjoying some books!

Unicorns will gallantly float through my dreams should I win because I'll be deliriously happy~

Thirteen reasons is hard to come up with when you can only think of how much you love and darn it why can't I think of any other reasons!?

SOS I need more books because I think I read everything my library has to offer lol

Reading is a drug, one that I'm more than happy to continue taking.

Quickly before I run out of city from this dying heat.

Please please please. Saving money for college sucks since I then have to give up buying books.

Open minded to donating books to hospitals, libraries, and friends after reading

Next, next, next week is when I start school again. Nooooo! Needs to enjoy the last few days sucking up enough YA books to last for the next few months

I suck. lol this was harder than I thought.

I tried to be a little creative with my A-M entry, so I wrote you a poem!

All books make me happy,
But YA books in particular.
Carry them with me wherever I go,
Don't want to pass up a chance to read.
Everyone looks at me, thinks it's
Funny that I read in line, I tell them,
Got to or else I might die.
Ha, they say, you'll die anyway.
I'd rather die reading than bored though, I reply!
Just leave me a book and I'll love you forever,
Kindred spirits we will be.
Let me just say this, books are
Magical journeys to take so be sure to share with me when you're through!

So here are my thirteen reasons why I NEED those books.

1. My parents think I spend entirely too much money on books and get mad when I come home with new ones all the time.

2. I live in a very small town with an even smaller library with no selection of newer books.

3. Reading is my favorite hobby to do when I'm not working or going to classes.

4. Free books would make me explode with happiness.

5. I have a twin sister that I'll share with so it would be like two people getting to win.

6. I share books with my grandma who is going to be 81 and still enjoys YA books.

7. If I got free books then I would have more money to spend on my supplies and prizes during my student teaching this semester.

8. Because I have a terrible problem with curiousity and want to know what other books are in the box.

10. My closest bookstore is over an hour away one way so this would save me a lot of gas.

11. Because I never seem to win anything and then I can say I won something really awesome.

12. I always need new books to read and I really want those books.

13. The last reason is because all the people I know at college think I'm weird cause I would rather read than go out and party.

Regardless of whether I win, which would be awesome if I did, good luck with all your future work.

Ok. Here is my poetic attempt. I tried to make each line read like a separate reason on its own but also connect to the lines before and after:

Night voice is for reading
open invitations bound strong by
poetry in character, a
quiet with beauty
right as twilight in summer.
Sudden in strength--in words
touching fingers, that seascape
to the heart,
under linen, flashlight dreams
forged from
vaults of oil burning the soul.
Where images form as a power,
Xerxes breathing life to page,
yearning for worlds to conquer a
zealous pursuit of imagination.

Here are some other reasons-I love to read and review YA, I will give many books away to teenage read-o-holics at my school, and it would totally feel like an early Christmas!

Ooh fun procrastination excuse! Hooray!

1. One book is never (ever) enough.
2. Three books are better but only just.
3. 13 is more like it.
4. Resistance is futile! All your book belong to me!
5. Elizabeth Scott is a kind, generous person and not entirely impervious to blatant flattery.
6. Always carry a book with you when you go to the dentist, my mother taught me. And I need root canal.
7. Soon school will be back in session and I will actually have time to read. Oh the anticipation.
8. Oh please. Please please please.
9. Not for nothing did I only yesterday lug home yet another bookcase (fished from someone's trash).
10. Serenity all too often eludes me -- except when reading. Thus reading makes me a kinder, nicer person and thirteen books would make me thirteen times nicer. Which is a lot of nice. Which the world needs.
11. While I happily ransack the library shelves on a weekly basis, there's nothing quite like new books of your very very own that don't smell of other people's cats.
12. Happiness is not wealth, fancy cars, a glamorous job or a week on a yacht in the Bahamas. Happiness is the rich quiet of the early evening in a house when everyone is reading. These books would therefore generate happiness beyond sordid material wealth.
13. Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow is imaginary. Only today is real. Except in books when times present, past and future are always real, always now.

These are my one-three 13 reasons why and it was a fun way to punctuate my morning's work. Thanks!

You always have the most wicked contests!!!

13 REASONS WHY I WOULD LOVEEE TO WIN THOSE BOOKS!

Not many things on this planet, will make me *squee*, but if I see a box of books waiting for me, I won't have any choice but to!

On occasion IF infrequently, I will actually have money, but more times than none, I don't have any money to buy books.

Perhaps you are one of the nicest and generous authors for doing this and it would be an crazily great, if I won books from you!

Quite seldom, you will find me without a book.

Reading helps me escape. I'll be reading a lot when I go on this oh-so-wonderful trip later on today.

School starts next week. I'm in all honors classes, sports all year round, theatre and other clubs. These books are what keep me sane.

Truly, I think if you are the one that is putting these books together, they must be amazing, if it got your approval!

Undeniably, books are wicked good.

"Vacation" is what I'm going on in a few hours. I would rather eat glass than go -that vacation from Hell story, I sent you for the other contest is basically this- and knowing that I could win these books, makes it all better.

Well, all in all, books make me happy. What's better than being happy?

Xanadu is a great musical. That has absolutely nothing to do with this. Let's try using it in a sentence. With all the books, I can create a bookshelf to put them on and it will create a xanadu.

Young adult books are my addiction. Why else would I make a blog devoted to them?

Zestful is what I'll be, if I win this contest!

Thank you so much for holding this contest! I appreciate it!

hehe, ok, i'm up for a challenge. here it goes!........oh, i think i actually have more than 13 reasons why, but i will narrow down:

N- Nothing makes me
happier than owning books and reading them...could use a little cheering up

O- Oxygen, that's what books are like to me...i've been sulking around lately with nothing to do but living my life each day wasting away...ok ok, i'll stop.

P- People are beginning to wonder what's wrong with me...it's that i don't have any new books to read!

Q- Quitting my life wouldn't be a very wise choice, but winning these books would be...could help! :)

R- Running away from your life is fun! That's what books are here for.

S- Standard Answer: I want free books!

T- Thanking you a billion times at the end of this contest wouldn't be appropriate...but kissing your feet would! I will thank you for saving my sanity!!

U- Utopia is my home, my realm of sanity, the place where i belong, the place where i should go back to...you can help me get back there!!...all i need is that key to the front door. ;-) that's right, NEW BOOKS!
Ahhh, i can almost taste the wood burning in the fireplace next to my big comfy chair where i like to sit and relax, reading in my home, in my utopia, where falling snow disappears on the white ground outside of that big front door where fantastical adventures reside and...well, you get the point

V- Vampires might live forever, but I don't!(damn) Another reason as to why I need these books...may i remind you of the word OXYGEN! Vampires can read whatever they want at whatever time. not me, me=human. TIME IS PRECIOUS! and i'd rather be reading.

W- Whitton, Charlotte said once that "BOREDOM is like a pitiless zooming in on the epidermis of time. Every instant is dilated and magnified like the pores of the face." Yes, exactly! Help me! Make time go faster! I don't need to zoom in anymore!!...if anything...
a magnifying glass included with my books might be appropriate...THEN zooming in may be suitable... sucking into the book might be easier and faster as well...also, i may see every word clearly and BIGGER so i may enjoy the words more, and engulf each and every lovely word there is.

X- X is for...anyone? anyone? Bueller? no, not bueller...but it's for the sound that the buzzer makes for the wrong winner...the right answer is: me=winner!

Y- Y do I exactly need these books? Hm, well, I'm bored OUT OF MY MIND, no money to buy any of the new books out, don't want to keep waiting for my library to grab a hold on some the new YA books, i like to own the books rather than borrow them anyways because of the marvelous connection you have with books, you want to remember forever the impact...etc

Z- Zzzz, i'm sleeping here, ah no! Not good! Not reading like I should be!! Wasting away with the fantasies of my own mind when i should be reading of others.

Hope these are good enough. :) hahaha! That was fun! But i truly do mean all of it!!

13. Even if I don't win, I'm still very appreciative that you took the time to read this.
