dc area book signing (yay!) and contest

Wednesday, October 07, 2009

I'm super happy to say that, thanks to the awesomeness that is the KidLitosphere Conference, I'll be signing copies of Something, Maybe at Hooray for Books in Alexandria on Sunday, October 18th at 2 PM--if you can come, I'd sure love to see you!

Hooray for Books is in Old Town Alexandria at 1555 King Street, and I will have a few little gifts on hand for people who come by....

And now for the contest--this week I'm giving away an ARC of a book everyone's buzzing about: Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick.

It's about forbidden love, a sacred oath--and a fallen angel.

With all that, how can you possibly go wrong? Plus the cover is just gorgeous--which leads me to this week's contest question:

What's your all-time favorite young adult novel cover? You can tell me your least favorite too, if you want--I say let's hear what you love AND what you don't!

Leave me a comment about your fave--and unfave--young adult book covers by midnight EST this Friday, October 9th and then I'll pick one name at random from the comments and that person will win the ARC of Hush, Hush!

I also have a few links to share:

Pimp My Novel has another post up about comp titles, or books used to forecast how well your book may sell. If you haven't read the earlier post, please do--I'd never even heard of comp titles until Pimp My Novel!

The Rejectionst on why nobody likes jerkwads

Victoria Strauss, the force behind one of the best publishing websites out there, Writer Beware, has some thoughts on self promotion

There's a lot of stuff going on with the FTC and on-line book reviewers--the best overview of the situation I've found is at Dear Author

Nathan Bransford on why you should never call other books trash in your query letter --I think Nathan sums it up very nicely with this: "But try and resist the "trash" syndrome, especially if you're a writer. Not only have you probably stopped learning, but don't forget: someone else thinks your books are trash too, and they're no more right than you are."

Can't wait to hear about your fave--and least fave--young adult covers!

aww. I so wish I was down with my aunt! (She's the one who brought me to the Tyson's Corner signing). Old Town is my FAVORITE part of Alexandria <333. I'd so be there if I could! ;)

I love the UK cover of Sarah Dessen's Along for the Ride. I love the book itself, too, which is a plus.
My unfavorite? I'll go with The Vampire Academy. The cover looks really trashy, in my opinion. Not that the book is, of course!

Anyway, thanks for the contest! I've heard fabulous things about Hush, Hush.

I love the cover of 'Along for the Ride' by Sarah Dessen; I also love the style of the Private books by Kate Brian - they're pretty cool.

I dislike the cover of "Carpe Diem" by Autumn Cornwell ... the book is AMAZING, but I don't think the cover fits it as well as it could.

One of these days, I will make it to one of your signings...

My favourite book cover? Hmm...I have to say that the cover of Trickster's Choice is one of the most intriguing covers (imho) ever. Not sure if I have a favourite-favourite cover, but that's one of them, definitely. I also love the colours in the Magic Study cover. And The Chosen One has a great cover. And me being a teenage girl...the covers for The Luxe series. I. Want. Those. Dresses.

As far as least favourite...again, not sure if I have one, but I totally agreed with ellie_enchanted. The Vampire Academy covers are pretty bad, especially the old ones. Definitely off-putting, but the books are fantastic.

On the whole, I like photographic covers. Preferably the model is not looking directly at the camera (the above-mentioned Trickster's Choice being an exception). I also like covers with objects that are the focus. Not a fan of illustrated covers or one that look oldfashioned or something...It's hard to say, really, what kind of covers I like and what I don't. (Maybe it's that I read so much...covers don't really matter...?)

I've always wanted to go to a book signing! I've never been. And I'm pretty sure I'm missing out!

Ooh, I've yet to read Hush, Hush. And I'm so excited to!

The cover of Hush, Hush is actually my fave...but another one would have to be...Psych Major Syndrome's cover. I haven't read that one either, but I really want to!
My least fave? Hm. I'm not sure I have one. But...I kinda dislike the cover of Ice (by Sarah Beth Durst). It just doesn't feel right, to be honest..

Why I Let my Hair Grow Out by Maryrose Wood (and both sequels!) is my all-time favorite cover. No question about it.

Least favorite I'd have to say the new covers for Meg Cabot's 1-800-Where-Are-You series. The old ones were fine, and I'm not a fan of the illustrations on the new ones!

I love the cover to Hush by Donna Jo Napoli. So pretty !Also, The Explosionist by Jenny Davidson - another awesome one.

My all time fav. cover would be the one to my copy of Alice and Wonderland. If you have ever read the book or seen the movie you can just imagine what the cover looks like..

Least fav.? Well I alwayd thought the Sharon Creech where kind of boring, but those corvers may have changed. Recently my least-likable one had been Eon. Cover was meant more for guys, I suppose.

While everyone is on the VA covers, I agree mostly. I actually do like the Blood Promise cover and one other. However I don't like the gate thingy on all of them, nor the titles. I also especially don't like the new just released cover...

i'm gonna say my favorite covers are Scott Westerfeld's Uglies/Pretties/Specials/Extras, the ones with the faces. I like it becuase it follows with the major theme of the book. It's representative of the characters and the plot.

I know they say, "don't judge a book by its cover!" But the truth is, we do. So I usually don't pick up and look at books that have boring covers. For instance, the books Wake and Fade. While i've heard great things about the books, I'm not crazy about the covers and probably woulnd't have picked them up unless someone had recommended them to me.

Interesting question..:)

actually the first one that jumps to mind in Hush, Hush. I love the black and white, it is so dramatic. Close second between the Mortal instruments covers and Dark Devine.

Scott Westerfeld's Uglies series are my favorites. They are very unique and artful.

The vampire Academy covers are not nearly good enough to be on the books they are. The books are so much better than you think they will be based on the cover.

My favorite YA novel cover is Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey. Too bad I haven't read it yet. And my least favorite is Frostbite by Richelle Mead (the older version), but I love the book itself, it's just the cover that I don't like. :)

Favorite cover would definitely have to be the Twilight Saga's book covers. They're so simple...yet they all have a meaning pertaining to the book.

Least favorite would have to be The Vampire Academy covers OR Den of Shadows book covers.

Anyone who says, "Don't judge a book by the cover,"...it's the first thing everyone sees and definitely gives a lasting impression of the book. It really decides if someone will pick up the book or not. If the cover is unappealing and someone doesn't suggest reading it...honestly I don't pick it up or even give it a second thought.

My favorite cover right now would have to be Jessica Verday's THE HOLLOW. So stunningly beautiful. I also REALLY like the cover for CATCHING FIRE by Suzanne Collins because it actually has to do with the book :) Check out the bird on the cover and what it's placed on, then read the novel and find out what else is so much like what the bird on the cover is on. Sneaky.

I HATE the US cover for GRACELING (the name of the author eludes me). I think it's alright and all, but not eye catching. The UK has much prettier covers :(

Favorite cover is Wicked Lovely, I'm a designer so I *love* a well designed cover and WL definitely fits the bill. Its also a fantastic book!

Un-fav cover? New Moon. Totally pointless and unrelated to the story. SM tried to connect the two with some BS answer. But, really, whoever designed it just didn't know what the story was about. (Good photography tho!)

Hi, Elizabeth!

My favorite book cover of all time would have to be the U.S. Wicked Lovely, by Melissa Marr. The frozen rose is gorgeous, and I love noting the red fingertips of the girl who's holding it. You can almost feel yourself going numb with cold, studying it.

And my least favorite... I guess that would have to be... the Breaking Dawn cover, by Stephenie Meyer. I know this might be crazy to some people, but every other cover in that series I just found so lovely and and easy to relate to the story. And while I understand how the chess peces tie in with Breaking Dawn, the cover just sticks out like a sore thumb in my eyes when compared with the others.

Thanks for this opportunity!

Right now one of my favorite covers is Ruined a Ghost Story. I also like the cover for One of the Survivors.

For least favorite, I'd say Losing Joe's Place by Korman. The cover is fine, for back in the day, but it needs an update STAT. It's such a great book and the cover screams 1988.

I know they say you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover but there are just some amazing ones out there... but now only are the covers awesome, so is the book! Some of my favourite covers are City of Bones by Cassandra Clare and My Soul to Take by Rachel Vincent. The cover for Fallen by Lauren Kate looks really nice and of course, I love the one for Hush, Hush!

Have fun at the signing!

I more often find covers that I like or don't like than covers that I love. But, recently, I found one I love. It's new - Malinda Lo's Ash has a beautiful cover. I just got the book and I am so excited to read it!

I'm going to cheat and say that I hate books that (mainly in 90s YA books) have a drawn version of real person. Maybe I don't like it because it was so overdone, but I just hate it!

That's a toughie.

I love the cover of The Hunger Games series. They're really representative of the series.

I'm not a fan of the classics they've been publishing with Twilight-like covers. I just thank someone upstairs that I haven't had the misfortune of seeing the P&P cover yet.

I love the cover on the hardcover edition of Ann Turnbull's No Shame, No Fear. The simplicity of the girl sitting with her back to the reader, and her hair up, gets at the heart of the story.

My favourite YA book cover is The Adoration of Jenna Fox (hardback). I just love the butterfly. I also like the covers for the Jessica Darling series by Megan McCafferty very much.

My least favourite covers are those of the Evernight series by Claudia Grey... I read the books and they are both great, but the covers just give me a "blah" feeling.
