mmm...food. (and a contest!)

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Maybe it's just because I'm extra hungry this morning for some reason, but I've got food on the brain! (One of the things I liked about writing The Unwritten Rule was putting in all that stuff about cook-offs--they are fascinating, and I had a lot of fun learning about them, and how dedicated contesters are!)

So, as long as I'm thinking about food, I figure--let's have a food-centric contest!

Tell me about your favorite food or place to eat--and if you like to go somewhere that has a website or has been on TV, etc., definitely mention that!

I'll take comments about your favorite food(s)/places to eat through midnight this Friday, April 16th, and then I'll pick the five foods and places that sound the best and each of those ten people (five for food, five for places!) will get a FREE young adult novel!* (And yes, you can comment on your favorite food AND place!)

Can't wait to hear what you all have to say--I'm getting hungrier just thinking about it!

*Because I've blown through just about all of this year's postage budget, this contest is only open to US residents, or those who can have a book mailed to them c/o someone with a US address.

Hmmm, I think my favorite place to eat is this place in Cleveland called Melt aka Melt Bar and Grilled.
The website is here: http://www.meltbarandgrilled.com/
I love this place because for some reason I'm a picky eater but I love grilled cheese. This place has so many different kinds of grilled cheese sandwiches that are all so delicious. I went there thinking it would be good, but it was literally the best sandwich I ever ate. And I eat a lot of sandwiches so that's saying a lot. If you're ever in the Cleveland area, you should definitely go there! You might have to wait a little bit for a table though.

As for absolute favorite food, I love making potatoes. My favorite kind are chopped up and cooked in a pan with onions. I put a bunch of seasoning on them like garlic powder, poultry seasoning, parsley, etc. It's sooooo good. Sometimes I even add bacon bits which just makes them 5,000 times better. Now I'm hungry thinking about it!

Hope those sound as good to you as they do to me :)
Have a lovely day!

One of the most delicious things anyone (non-vegetarians) can eat is a Rio Grande Valley, TX Botana Platter. You can only get Botanas like this in about 3 counties of Tx... Seriously! It's like a regional delicacy and they are so delicious. Imagine Nachos and Fajitas getting together and making a baby that's on steroids and is topped with quesadillas. Here's a picture that kinda shows what I'm talking about http://ticosrestaurant.com/ticos_3.jpg.

There are a zillion amazing places in Seattle to eat. One of the biggest reasons I love eating here is because of the amazing food culture. So I could list a dozen restaurants that make me want to sing, but instead I'll direct you to a happy place in the blogosphere (grounded in the Seattle area, of course) that makes me drool on a regular basis: Not So Humble Pie, http://notsohumblepie.blogspot.com/ a delicious food (mostly baking) blog with yummy photography, excellent tutorials and recipes for everything. :)

I'm a total foodie, but my absolute favorite comfort foods are grilled cheese with bacon sandwiches and french fries (especially sweet potato fires). The sweet potato fries at THE VIG in Phoenix are amazing!

When I am in Montreal, I almost always get poutine. French fries, gravy and melted cheese. SO SO good.

OK...I'm going at this two fold. I LOVE the Rainforest Cafe (http://www.therainforestcafe.co.uk/) but mostly for the atmosphere.

Foodwise, I want to introduce you to BANOFFIE PIE...A mixture of Banana and warm toffee/caramel with whipped cream and chocolate flakes on the top. Take a look at this and then tell me you DONT want a piece (http://www.mydish.co.uk/recipe/5822/Scrummy%20Banoffee%20Pie)

As always, thank you for the contest and good luck to everyone :)

My favorite place to eat is in Pensacola, FL at a place called The Mellow Mushroom. They make the best pizza! It isn't greasy at all, and it tastes fabulous.

Recently, my favorite food has been these frozen chicken pot pies my dad bought. It's really rare that we eat frozen stuff, but these pies are amazing!

I lived in Chicago for a few years and I still miss the food there. I always thought Southport Grocery had the best cupcakes I've ever tasted. And if you ordered them to go, they came in this cute box with string that looked like it came right out of a cool single girl chick lit novel! (Ok, so I might have ordered them to feel a little like Bridget Jones!:) The whole store is cute-it's a cafe and grocery store and while everything is good, the cupcakes are amazing. You can even order them online! http://www.southportgrocery.com/

Oooooh. Reading these comments is making my tummy grumble. I can tell you what I don't like and that's dorm food. I can't wait until I can live off campus and make my own food.

But I digress.

My favorite food is my mom's homemade macaroni and cheese. She makes this yummy cream sauce and sprinkles chedder cheese and bacon and top and the stuff is like one thousand calories a bite but magically delicious. She makes it for me whenever I visit home. And writing this has made me hungry and homesick. Dang it.

My favorite place to eat out has to be the Brazille Grill on Time Square in NYC. I've only been to the city three times my whole life but we eat there the first night every time and I just love it. Especially their garlic grilled skirt steak with butter gravy and banana chips.

And now I shall go prepare myself a bowl of easy mac. because that's what I eat for 99% of my lunches :-/ thanks a lot.

BTW, i finally finished Unwritten Rule. It was fantabulous! Great work :-)

My favorite place to eat, hands down is Olive Garden! I've been obsessed with that place for years! The salad and Toscana soup! Also the Ravioli De Portobello and Five Cheese Ziti are my favorites! Along with Lemon Cream Cake and Coke topped with a cherry!

But if I had to make something, I usually just make myself a bowl of lettuce (I pick out the lettuce in the already made salad bags), shred lunch turkey on top and have a corner to put mayo. Then I dip it in the mayo, yum :)

There's actually a lot of food and places I like to eat at. I'm a former pastry chef, food is a really big part of my life lol.

My favorite place to eat is a candy/ice cream shop called Sarris. It's a small shop in Canonsburg, PA that is best known for its amazing chocolates. People flock there to buy chocolates for Easter, Christmas, and other special occasions.

I love their ice cream. My fiance actually proposed to me outside of Sarris after surprising me with a trip there one day. Sarris has this melted chocolate which hardens once it hits the cold ice cream. It's heavenly!

I think it's the Texas in me, but my favorite food/dish is Steak Salad. MMM. There's different variations of it. My favorite has steak, lettuce, red potatoes, tomatoes, green beans, onions and bleu cheese all tossed in a balsalmic vinaigrette.

Here's a picture : http://www.hercafe.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/savorysteaksalad.jpg

My favorite restaurant is Black Walnut Cafe. I think it's only Houston based. Not sure though. It has a little bit of everything. Soup, Salad, burgers, sandwiches, pasta, steak, chicken, etc. The best thing about it are the coffee drinks and desserts. They have specialty desserts every night so it's not the same stuff all the time. Fruit tarts? Cheesecake? Brownies? Cake? So good, so good! *drools*

Here's a link to the restaurant website : http://www.blackwalnutcafe.com/

Wow...now I'm starving, hahaha :P

My favorite food has to be Crab Loui. Basically it's a white cheese type sauce, and it's got crab mixed in and put over noodles and it is really really good, especially how my father and I make it. My favorite place to eat (though I'm not sure if it's only here or what) is Frosty Mill. It's all homemade stuff and it's really good. They don't have a website sadly.

My favorite place to eat is called Tiki Terrace and it's a Tiki bar with a bar and torches and people who dance around Hawaiian style, very cool. It's a lot of fun to eat there, food + entertainment from the dancers. The theme is awesome and it's always great fun :)

My favorite food to eat is homemade cinnamon rolls. I take Pillsbury crescent rolls and roll them in cinnamon, brown sugar, and regular sugar, and then wrap them up using a marshmallow as the center and cook like a regular cinnamon roll. When they heat, the marshmallows explode and add a sugary taste to the best part of the roll :)

My favorite place in the world to eat is this little winery in this extremely small town in Iowa where my parents live. Daly Creek Winery & Bistro (http://www.dalycreekwinery.110mb.com/) They have the best dipping bread and the baked brie is to die for! In addition to excellent food (I haven't had anything I didn't like) it has such a great ambiance- generally playing Josh Groban, Michael Buble (or similar style) with candle lit tables with white linen cloths- very European bistro feeling. And, the wine is pretty good too (Gothic White is my favorite- named so because Grant Wood, the painter of American Gothic, grew up in this town) :)

My favorite food is a chicken dish that my grandfather makes, we call it Papa's Chicken. It is chicken that is cooked in a pressure pan with paprika and is served with rice pilaf... yummmm.

One of my favorite things to eat is pizza, but with my wheat allergy that was not really an option unless I made it at home. That is until I found out that a local pizza places makes gluten free pizza (which I can have!)

The place I can go to is called Silver Beach Pizza:
and I go there about twice a month. Everyone that works there knows me and is always super friendly when I go in, and the best part is that I get to feel "normal" again. This place even saved me on New Years Eve when my friends were all planning on getting special Chicago pizza (we celebrated in Chicago with friends), cause Silver Beach will sell you an uncooked pizza that you can bake at home!

I just love them, and I think that in some ways that that place has helped save my sanity! lol

My favorite place in the world to go is Peanut Butter & Co restaurant. I love peanut butter, and this place is like Nirvana for people like me! It is located in NYC, NY. I don't live there, but every time I am there, I have to go have a double decker pb&j sandwhich with a cold glass of 2% milk. They have everything peanut butter though. They also use their own peanut butter, homemade! It's in Greenwhich Village, so it's also a very cool place to hang out! It's a nice quaint little cafe! I love it.

My absolute favorite food of all time would have to be my comfort food; mashed potatoes. After my first break-up I didn't bust out the Ben&Jerry's ice cream. I whipped up some mashed potatoes! They're so creamy and delcious, especially garlic mashed potatoes. And, sometimes I'll add in some things like bacon bits, or grilled winnies. It makes it even better.

I live in Victoria, Texas, the hole-in-the-wall kind of town that is approximately two hours from 3 different major cities in Texas (Austin, Houston, and San Antonio). When my family goes to Houston, we sometimes go to this high-class Japanese Buffet called Tokyo One. (Website here: http://www.tokyo-one.com/index.html). The sushi is amazing (the only kind of sushi I eat is salmon, though), and their tempora shrimp (deep fried shrimp) is AMAZING. Amazing. The batter is so light and the shrimp isn't all rubbery and overcooked. And their fried dumplings are amazing. Dumplings = amazing. Fried things = amazing. Fried dumplings = out of this world. <3

And my favorite food is probably this garlic fried rice that I make. Basically you take some steamed white rice (best if it's like a day old, you don't want to cook it right before you use it), chop up about 2 medium-sized cloves of garlic, and you sauteed the garlic. Then you add the rice, and kind of chop it up and soften it in the pan, then add soy sauce and a little bit of salt. It is so good and so easy. :) If I could ship fried rice over to Washington I would. :)

My favorite place to eat is called The Fickle Pickle in Roswell, Georgia. It's this really old house that's been turned into a restaurant, it has a really great atmosphere and the people are the nicest! It's smack dab in the middle of Historic Roswell so it's a really great area and so beautiful! On days with really good weather people love walking around the neighborhood and enjoying the scenery...and food! I usually get an order of their chips and fried pickles, which are the best I've ever tasted! If you ever come down here you should definitely check it out!

It mostly depends on what I'm in the mood to eat of course. However:

- I can live on pasta! Of any kind for the most part. Growing up my friends and family called me the pasta queen. LOL.

But for different types of food in general ... lets see ...

- Lately I have been addicted to the City Wine Sellar Deli, Bakery, and Wine Bar (click here to see a video I created on the business). They have the best wraps and sandwiches. My usual there is the Italian Chicken Wrap [which is sliced chicken breast with red peppers, mayo, melted mozzarella cheese, lettuce, and tomato] .. soo yummy!

Fast Food:
- I'm LOVE pizza these days so I can't get enough of Domino's. [www.dominos.com]
- For cheap yummy stuff ... you gotta go to Sonic! [www.sonicdrivein.com]
- For a great burger ... it's always Wendy's! [www.wendys.com]

Now I'm hungry and gotta find some food! Tootles! - Jess

My favorite eatery is La Petite Abeille Union Square NYC. http://www.petiteabeille.com/

I love this place because its cozy, great for catching up with a long lost friend, and delicious brunches which include waffles and fresh strawberries. I had the Poulet Grille. It is a grilled chicken sandwich with pesto and mayo, side includes a Arugela and Red Onion and my bff swears by the Eggs Benedict on top of smoked salmon and baguette. Sides of mashed potatoes with carrots and salad. If you ever come to NYC and you want a cute French place with awesome variates on the menu, try this place out.

My favorite food is a juicy meaty hamburger from Five Guys. Its like the east coast In-N-Out.

Please count me in.

Ooh, reading this post is making my tummy grumble!
And I just ate!

Anyway, onto my favorite food...
Mac and (n'?) cheese. Yum.
My mom makes the best cheesy dish, too. I don't know exactly what she puts in it, but she layers.
It's basically traditional mac and cheese from a box only it's layered with four different types of cheese. We shred cheese over the whole dish once more, slide it in the over, and BAM. Creamy, cheesy, salty, slightly spicy (a little Tabasco sauce to give it a spicy kick!)... Oh gosh, a bite of that is a bite from heaven. Oh, and we use seashell pasta which somehow makes it taste even better!

My favorite restaurant is actually a Korean restaurant. I'm mostly Korean, (also a fourth, well, white?) so we visit lots of Asian places. It's called Seu Hyung (my English translation) and it has the BEST sweet ribs. Ever.
Also the desert is fabulous. You could order the traditional sundae, but I typically ask for the mochi ice-cream. It's mochi with a chocolate ice-cream filling, and powdered sugar on top. (in case you aren't familiar, mochi is sticky, sweet rice cake. Sounds gross, but it really isn't)

What's yours?
Love, Hannah

I think my favorite place to eat a really great hamburger is Mr. Bartley's in Boston, MA. All the burgers have cool names like The Barack Obama and The Kevin Garnett. The place also has all these funny signs and cool posters/memorabilia. It was also featured on the Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Guy Fieri, the host of the show, even left his mark on the wall! It was really exciting because I got to be there while they were filming more footage.

The website is http://www.mrbartley.com/

Have a great day!

My current favorite place to eat is a little local place here in Columbia Sc called El Burrito. It is amazing. Most of the food is locally grown/ produced. It is all fresh and made in house. They have this grilled chicken salad that is the best I've ever had, it comes with homemade lime- cilantro vinaigrette . Also, each Thursday night during the spring and summer they have live bluegrass music, it is tons of fun.

My favorite food is tougher but as boring as it sounds I might go with grilled chicken salad... now I don't mean boring "I'm on a diet" grilled chicken salad I mean "so amazing it has to be bad for you" grilled chicken salad. In addition to the on mentioned above I also love one at Wild Wings that has wing sauce, dressing, cheese, and bacon on me. In my hometown of Beaufort there is a restaurant called Upper Crust that makes a grilled chicken salad with french fries and melted cheese. So while not a healthy salad option grilled chicken salad might be one of my favorite foods.
