Interview with Jeri Smith-Ready--and win a copy of SHADE!

Wednesday, May 05, 2010

The Girlfriends' Cyber Circuit (GCC) is a webring of YA novelists, and I'm happy to be part of it because I get to talk to other YA authors about their books--which, well, how awesome is that? (And I think we all know how much I love YA!)

Today, I'm talking with Jeri Smith-Ready about her new novel, Shade

Me: Tell us about your book in ten words or less!

Jeri: Passion, mystery, music, ghosts, starry nights, and cute guys. (Me: OOOOH!)

Me: What's the best writing advice you've ever been given?

Jeri: Once you submit a book for publication, get to work on the next one (in another series, NOT a sequel to the one you just submitted) right away! It helps you distance yourself emotionally from the book you submitted (so it hurts less if it gets rejected, or so you can do edits more easily if it’s accepted). Also, if the editor enjoys your writing but for whatever random reason can’t buy that manuscript, they might ask, “What else do you have?” You should have an answer ready, other than “Um, nothing,” or “Um, I have two sequels to that book you don’t like.” (Me: This is great advice!!)

Me: What do you wish you'd known about being published/publishing before your book/first book came out?

Jeri: I wish I knew how much is out of the author’s control. There’s a lot we can do to raise awareness of our books, but it’s up to the publisher to distribute them and in the end, it’s up to the reader to enjoy them. All the promo in the world won’t help a book that isn’t in stores, or that just doesn’t resonate with readers. (Me: Jeri is SO right about this--I'm loving this interview!)

Me: What's the last book you read that you loved so much you had to tell everyone about it?

Jeri: Jandy Nelson’s The Sky Is Everywhere. I loved it so much, I actually hugged it when I was finished. It was the perfect blend of humor and sadness, and the characters were quirky without being caricatures. I would read it again in a heartbeat, which is rare for me.

Me: So, I hear you have a copy of Shade to give away?

Jeri: I do!

Me: YAY!! So, everyone, if you're interested in winning a *signed* copy of Shade, just leave a comment telling me what YOUR favorite salad dressing is (you'll see why in a minute) by midnight EST on Friday, May 7th, and then I'll pick one comment via the random number generator (or the most drool-worthy dressing), and that person will win the FREE (and signed!) copy of Shade! (Please note that this contest is only open to US residents/those with US addys only)

Me: Random Bonus Question Time...What's your favorite salad dressing?

Jeri: Honey mustard. I often try others just because I feel like I should, but really, this is the best.

Thank you, Jeri, for that awesome interview, and don't forget to leave your comment about YOUR favorite salad dressing to win a free AND signed copy of Shade by midnight EST this Friday, May 7th!

I'm totally a traditional ranch girl. I rarely eat anything else on my salad dressing.

P.S. My word verification for this comment is "dines." Totally appropriate. :)

My favorite salad dressing is Ranch. It is really about the only salad dressing I like. I don't like salad, but I eat Ranch dressing with just about everything. Goldfish (it's really good!), chicken (grilled, fried, baked, all kids of chicken), pizza, pretzels, french fries, certain types of chips, and on sandwhiches!

I myself am an Italian Dressing kinda girl .... do you have dry chicken? Load that dressing on top and it's sooo much better! =0)

Cute interview!

I've been dying to read Shade!

While the Texas in me screams Ranch, my favorite salad dressing has to be Balsamic Vinaigrette. But Ranch is a very close second. :) MMM.

Thanks for having me, Elizabeth! Wow, we have a lot of ranch folks here, huh? Maybe I need to give it another chance. Look out, honey mustard! :-)

I love ranch the most but sometimes it's good to mix it with some honey mustard dressing, chicken, and bacon for a salad. :) I know it sounds gross but really it's not.

I'm very picky about dressing.
My favorite used to be a galic balsalmic, but then the quit making it.
Then Hidden Valley had a refrigerated ranch dressing in a glass bottle, that they stopped making.
Which leaves me to eat only ranch that comes from restaurants. (Odd, I know, but it always tastes better.)

May 05, 2010 8:33 PM
Blogger Jess said...

Oh posh! One of the best things about being a veggie (as Jeri can attest) is you can eat so many different salads with so many different dressings prefect for the specific salad!

Fail safe for me is sundried tomato vinaigrette followed by honey mustard (more for dipping everything in it than for salad, hence second place).

But now that I saw it, the ginger dressing on Japanese salads, YES. *craves*

So, three way tie???

Well, I'll go with Ranch if they only have "normal" flavors that I don't like. But my favorites are Red Wine Vinaigrette (try it on a Subway Cold Cut... so good!) & Greek Vinaigrette.

Thanks for the interview. I love that she hugs books she loves (and admits it)... because I do that too! Either with one I've wanted to read forever, I'll give it a hug the first time I get it into my hands.. or if I finish one that was unbelievable. : )

Thanks for the giveaway.

I asked for the recipe and the lady who made it said it was one package of guacamole (surprising since I HATE guac!) and I bottle of the store brand champagne vinigarette (who knew they made that?!?!) I am so going to try to make my own!

I don't use salad dressing because i hate salad. however if it is forced down my throat by my parental authorities, i try to smother it in so much dressing in some form of ranch or ranch-esque junk that it usually canceled out the nutrition of the lettuce.

Usually I'm a honey mustard or thousand islands girl, but when I make my own dressing, I like it sweet and a bit tangy. So I make it with fresh-squeezed orange juice, honey mustard, white vinegar, a little bit of sesame oil, and some sugar. And I drizzle it over a salad with orange or grapefruit slices, cold, crunchy lettuce, tomatoes, and raisins-- the raisins are what makes it really pop! :)
