Intereview with Kristina Springer! (and yes, there is a FREE book involved!)

Monday, August 30, 2010

The Girlfriends' Cyber Circuit (GCC) is a webring of YA novelists, and I'm happy to be part of it because I get to talk to other YA authors about their books--which, well, how awesome is that? (And I think we all know how much I love YA!)

Today I'm talking to Kristina Springer about her new novel, My Fake Boyfriend Is Better Than Yours (what a great title, right?)

Me: Tell us about your book in ten words or less!

Kristina: 2 BFFs + 2 Fake Boyfriends = Trouble

Me: What's the best writing advice you've ever been given?

Kristina: Let the rejections roll off your back.

Me: What do you wish you'd known about being published/publishing before your book/first book came out?

Kristina: How important the first three months after a book’s release are.

Me: What's the last book you read that you loved so much you had to tell everyone about it?

Kristina: Kristin Walker’s A Match Made in High School

Me: Random Bonus Question Time...What's your favorite salad dressing?

Kristina: Ranch.

Thank you, Kristina, for stopping by! And for you, lovely readers, I'll be back with last week's contest winner--and more!--very soon, but in the meantime, has anyone out there got a fake boyfriend story, or know of one? If you do, and have a US mailing addy, post it here by midnight TONIGHT, August 30th, and the best one (IMO) will get an ARC of Andrea Cremer's Nightshade OR an ARC of Cassandra Clare's The Infernal Devices (winner's choice!)

So, here's my "fake" boyfriend story. It comes in the age of Myspace...a friend picked a cute guys picture and made a profile for him. His name was "Trey" and he became my almost fake boyfriend aka he was really interested. He was always saying sweet things to me on my profile, telling me I looked awesome, and begging to get together. Long story short, another friend messages me and says, "Dude, who is this Trey guy? OMG, he's so cute. What's the story?" So, I panicked. I weighed my options, and I decided since she was also single like myself that I would be the bigger person and be honest. So I told the truth. Best part was the response I got. She was like, "HAHA, well, I'm not any better. Alex on my profile is a complete fabrication. So rock on with the fake guy!"

Hey, it's a tough world for the eternal single gal!

My fake boyfriend story is a pretty classic one. My first boyfriend had broke up with me for the girl he had gone out with previously, and I was devastated. So I asked my best guy friend to be my fake boyfriend to make the ex jealous. He obliged, and we carried on this fake romance for about a month and a half. It did not piss my ex off at all, he actually said he was happy for me.... totally backfired. But I did end up with my best friend and we have been together for about three years =]

I broke up with my imaginary boyfriend a few years ago. Things were going really well, but I guess you could say we broke up over a book. I read Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and it changed everything. It made me think that there's a lot more going on than a boyfriend (real or imagined). Friendships, hobbies, volunteering and exercising were all much more important to satisfying myself spiritually and physically.

He didn't take it well. He texted me 100 times per day and emailed my friends wondering, "What he had done wrong?" We came pretty close to a no contact order there.

I hope he's happy wherever he is now.

There was this one time when I was 16 and in NYC and spotted this billboard with this gorgeous model for Juicy Couture. So I took a picture and went home and photoshopped us together and then sent it to all my friends saying he was my new boyfriend, Sven Achilles. It didn't last very long but I still have that one infamous photo :)

Here it is: Me and my cousin where talking to my ex boyfriend (at the time). He was talking about what we were doing and me and my cousin came up with a plan to make him jealous. We told him we were at a party with a cute guy and sent him a picture of some random model online. The funny thing is that he believed the whole thing!! He ended up ending the talking (guess he got real jealous)!!

My fake boyfriend story completely freaked out my dad. He and my mom went to a wedding and my sister and I remained at home to watch my uncle's youngest daughter (children weren't allowed at the wedding). When my dad called to check up on us, I told him everything was fine and that my sister and her boyfriend were keeping things quiet. My sister, always playing along, shouted from across the room "Don't tell Dad Chris is over!" to which I replied to my Dad "actually, it's so quiet because he left" knowing he heard what my sister yelled. Before I could laugh, I hung up the phone and laughed so hard tears came to my eyes with my sister. Now, in order for you to understand how funny this is, my dad is one of those completely overprotective dads who (fake) threatens us that he'll bring out the Bebe gun when we bring our first guy over. That night, when my dad returned home, after we ignored his calls for the rest of the night, he threw a hit, screaming and yelling about boys being over. We let it go on, apologizing, until the next morning when he told him Chris wasn't real :D I think he was even more upset that we lied to him, but it was great!

Well, my fake boyfriend story came about in my teens (when else, right?) So I was in love with this boy (OK I thought I was in love). We were in this long distance relationship, talking all the time. Turns out he was only "dating" me to get closer to my best friend. If that isn't fake, I don't know what is.
