interview with Denise Jaden--win a copy of her book AND an ARC of The Mockingbirds

Tuesday, November 16, 2010

Today, I'm chatting with Denise Jaden about her book, Losing Faith

Me: Tell us about your book in ten words or less!

Denise: A sister's death and a terrible secret.

Me: What's the best writing advice you've ever been given?

Denise: My favorite advice comes from one Sydney Salter, who once told
me never to compare myself, my writing, or my publishing journey with
others. I wholeheartedly agree! Comparing can make you crazy!

Me: What do you wish you'd known about being published/publishing before
your book/first book came out?

Denise: How most things don't happen when they are "supposed" to. Revision letters may not be in or books aren't in stores or reviews are delayed. I thought I'd gotten pretty skilled at the waiting game during the query process but I guess not good enough!

Me: What's the last book you read that you loved so much you had to tell
everyone about it?

Denise: The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson. So beautiful and heart-wrenching and poetic.

Me: So, I hear you have something to give away...

Denise: I do! I have one copy of Saving Faith to give away (US addys only, please)

Me: Random Bonus Question: What's your favorite salad dressing?

Denise: A local restaurant makes and bottles their own Greek dressing and it is
definitely my favorite. It's called Rendezvous Dressing.

So, Denise is giving away a copy of Saving Faith (thank you, Denise!) and one of the winners of the ARC of The Mockingbirds never claimed it, so that's up for grabs as well!

To win both of these books, all you need is a US addy and to leave a comment telling me what your favorite part of Thanksgiving is by midnight EST this Friday, November 19th--and, as always, don't forget to leave a way for me to contact you!

My favorite part of Thanksgiving is being with my family. I didn't always appreciate them but now that I come home from college, it's definitely my favorite part.

My favorite part of Thanksgiving is the great outdoors! Almost every year my family and I go to Yosemite National Park and hike around. The cafeteria food is awful, but having a good time with family is what's best about Thanksgiving, right?

Thanks for the interview with Denise!

My favorite part of Thansgiving is actually the day after. Every year since before I can remember, my mom and I have spent the day after Thanksgiving putting up christmas decorations and pulling out the christmas albums and then my whole family watched A Christmas Story that night while I make my famous apple cider. Love it!

I love the whole getting together of family. We're always so consumed with what's going in our own lives so it's nice for at least one time of the year to enjoy each other's company.

My favorite part of Thanksgiving is being in the kitchen all day making food, munching on food, and hanging around spending time with family. It's one of my favorite holidays.

My favorite part of Thanksgiving is seeing family. My mom has 6 siblings (7 including her) and we live near her parents and one of her brothers so our town is the place to be during Thanksgiving in our family.

Plus, my grandma cooks an amazing dinner =D

My favorite part of Thanksgiving is definitely making the stuffing. I don't actually like to eat stuffing, but I remember growing up as a kid getting way too much enjoyment out of throwing chunks of bread into a bowl with a whole bunch of other stuff and stirring it all up into a mess with my hands.

I enjoy the cooking, Our family likes the practice of bringing one new dish to the table each year and to experiment with different countries dishes to broaden our worldwide perspective and take time to discuss world cultures.

My favorite part of Thanksgiving is what my family has coined the Thanksgiving day song. It is something that has been passed down for years that nobody knows the words to anymore, but every year we all try and butcher it. "Thanksgiving day, thanksgiving day..." and then 2 minutes of mumbles and giggles. It is horrible, but every year I look forward to watching the entire family butcher it.
